A Johannesburg-based woman took to Facebook to share details of a horror Uber drive she experienced recently.
Alexandra Sparrow said she took an Uber home from a work-related function and sat on the front next to the driver. He was initially nice, but things soon turned bad:
I was on my phone and looked up when we suddenly were on the side of a dark road and the driver had unbuckled his seatbelt and his hands were around my neck strangling me.
As if that wasn't enough, the driver had even more sinister intentions. Alexandra narrated:
I froze and didn't know what to do. He kept saying 'I've never been with a white lady before' and I just started crying when his hands started moving down.
After groping me and hurting me, a car came down the road and he panicked, drove away, and I jumped out at the first robot and ran to a garage. Girls please be careful, this world is a joke and I am so done with it all.
Alexandra's story shocked thousands of Facebook users, triggering over 11,000 shares, 5,500 reactions, and 600 comments.
Commenters expressed their sympathies to her. Dyke Moru wrote:
I am so sorry. I sincerely hope you find yourself again. Please keep your head up. You are respected as a woman by myself and many other men. And I honour you as a fellow person. We men must do better. You deserve so much better than what we incessantly put out.
Others gave Alexandra tips on how to make sure Uber removes the driver. They also urged her to identify him so he can be arrested.
