A rags to riches story is always an inspiring one, but one that stands out above all others is the story of Ntombizodwa Merriam Mahlangu, who went from domestic worker to graduate.
On Thursday, Mahlangu posted a photo with the caption:
“This is the story of my life and it shall be a lesson to my descendants. The moment you understand and appreciate your background… God provides you with wisdom to make the difference. Do not blame anyone for your past or present but grab whatever opportunity that comes your way to better your future. Its never too late!”
It was almost a decade ago that Mahlangu started working for Eleanor De Villiers as a domestic worker.
It was Eleanor who saw her potential and decided to help Mahlangu study to eventually become a graduate. Their dream was realised 9 years later.
Even more inspiring is how Mahlangu then thanked her 'other mother' who helped her graduate.
In a post she shared on her Facebook page. Mahlangu wrote: "It’s chooseday and I choose you mother. I was your employee at first; but later became your daughter whom you loved and supported no matter the circumstances. If it wasn’t for your financial assistance on my first course that opened doors for me, I wouldn’t be holding this BA degree. I wish the whole world could know about your kindness and the difference you've made in my life. You are dearly loved."
Her post was shared far and wide, with many congratulating her. Professor Thuli Madonsela also weighed in, Briefly.co.za gathered:
