While South Africa celebrates Day of Reconciliation on the 16th of December, there's another reason why this day is historically important. On this day in 1995, Orlando Pirates won the African Championship Cup.
The 90s are considered the best time in South Africa's football history. It was during this time that the Orlando Pirates made the country proud by winning the African Champions Cup (ACC) Final in 1995.
The Pirates took on ASEC Mimosas and won 3-2. They became the very first club from south of the equator to win the cup in their first try, according to www.sabreakingnews.co.za.
Briefly.co.za learned that the match was also later awarded the Game of the Decade Award by Kick Off Magazine.
For more than 20 years, Pirates was the only South African club to win the cup, and it wasn't easy to get there.
They had to beat Uganda’s Express FC, Nigeria’s BCC Lions, and Gabon’s Mbilinga FC to secure a shot at the final.
It was a glorious game and a fantastic win that had South African hearts almost bursting with pride.
