Freak hailstorm leaves 2 injured, buildings damaged at Sun City Resort

Sun International's Sun City Resort suffered massive damage, and two guests were injured in the biggest storm the resort has seen in decades. At about 4:30 pm on 15 December, a freak hailstorm hit the resort and led to damaged vehicles and buildings.

On 15 December, a sudden freak hailstorm caught Sun City Resort by surprise and caused a lot of serious damage to buildings and vehicles. The storm hit at about 4:30 pm.

Only two injuries were reported after guests slipped on wet floors, and they were treated at the resort before they were transported to the nearest hospital.

A report by IOL News indicates that the storm damaged about 200 of the resort's rooms. Tshepang Motsekuoa, the resort's public relations and communications manager, stated that the resort is relieved there were no casualties.

The whole thing happened in a matter of about 20 to 30 minutes. Luckily there were no fatalities, and until further notice there will be no checking in [of guests] taking place.

Briefly.co.za gathered that the Sun Soho Hotel is one of the areas that took the most damage. It is not clear yet just how much the damage is.

The resort had to evacuate guests and organised accommodation at nearby guesthouses. On Sunday morning, the staff went about continuing to clean up the damage; it is reported they worked tirelessly through the night.
