2018 in review: The 5 celebrity deaths that rocked Mzansi

While 2018 had its great and happy moments, there were also the times that South Africa was shaken by the deaths of beloved celebrities. Mzansi still mourns for the losses of HHP, Akhumzi, ProKid, Hugh Masekela, and icon Winnie Mandela.

Mzansi experienced deep loss in 2018 when young and old admired and beloved celebs were taken from us.

Briefly.co.za made a brief list of the 5 deaths that rocked South Africa the most. Every loss was tragic in its own way, and the list is in no particular order.

1. Winnie Mandela

Ma Winnie's death came as a shock to many as she had been snapped earlier at her granddaughter's Good Friday celebration. While she wasn't a celeb, she was an icon.

The veteran anti-apartheid activist passed away on April 2, 2018, after a battle with an illness. She inspired a generation of African women, many of whom honoured her by wearing black and using the hashtag AllBlackWothADoek.

2. HHP

Jabulani Tsambo, better known as HHP, died on October 24th, 2018. The musician was found dead in his Johannesburg home earlier in the day. His friend and rapper, Khuli Chana, said that HHP's death came as a shock to his friends and family. It was an unbelievable sadness.

3. ProKid

Hip-hop star ProKid (real name Linda Mkhize) died in the arms of his girlfriend, Mandisa Mbanjwa, whom he had been seeing for almost a year. ProKid died in August 2018 due to a rare cause of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. News of ProKid's death rocked the hip-hop community and his fans have been mourning him since.

4. Hugh Masekela

The death of Hugh Masekela gave a huge blow to the South African jazz industry. Famously known as the father of South African Jazz, Hugh was a trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer, and composer. He is famous for hit songs such as Soweto Blues and Bring Him Back Home. The musician died due to prostate cancer on the 23rd of January, 2018.

5. Akhumzi Jezile

28 April 2018, South Africans were devastated by the untimely death of a legend in the making. Akhumzi Jezile passed away in a tragic car accident that left a gaping hole in the heart of South Africa. A sense of intense loss fell over South Africa when the news first broke, and it hasn't really left. This young man had such an impact on so many lives that even months later, his loss is still felt most acutely.
