The new year is not even a week old and politicians are already putting their feet in their mouths. From former president Jacob Zuma to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, these four politicians already have their hands full with Twitter drama
Today is only the 3rd day of the year 2019 and it seems that some politicians are still stuck in the silly season.
From the former president Jacob Zuma doing a U-Turn on his previous standings on land reform, to Tito Mboweni earning himself a new nickname, Briefly.co.za explores the reasons why these leaders are in a the hot seat on social media.
Here are the 4 politicians who seem to have made enraging Twitter their New Years Resolution:
1. Jacob Zuma
While the former president is no stranger to controversy, and in fact might be completely comfortable in the hot seat, Jacob Zuma has marred his otherwise entertaining debut on social media platform Twitter.
Doing a complete turn around regarding land reform, Zuma explained that he felt land reform in the country is vital to the restoration of equality in the country.
While many agree with this viewpoint, many were wiser than this thinly veiled attempt to gain public support. The beliefs he so confidently shared in the two video posts were almost identical to the beliefs that got Julius Malema expelled from the ANC.
2. Donald Trump
The President of the United States of America is also no stranger to social media drama, but it seems that most of the reactions to his strange and underhanded New Years message were not very taken by his attempt.
In a very non-presidential message Trump has wished his ' haters and the fake news media' a happy New Year and had said that for those who did not suffer from what he dubbed as the 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' 2019 was set to be a fantastic year.
He encouraged his opposition to simply 'calm down and enjoy the ride' as great things would be happening for America.
3. Derek Hanekom
This is one Tweet that backfired horribly on the Tourism Minister. Posting a photo of Joburg Central, Hanekom had condemned the lack of action of the DA Mayor Herman Mashaba.
What he wasn't counting on is the fact that even ANC supporters, who would usually rally behind a jab at their opposition, would disagree with what many believed was a cheap shot.
@UnmovedLee-Children are falling into pit toilets in ANC run areas, go deal with young lives lost due to ANC incompetence and corruption.
@zottyzuly- Rich coming from you! Have you seen your @eThekwiniM it’s not called Dirtbin instead of Durban for nothing. At least Joburg has a clean up campaign the Mayor participates in. It’s 2019 - don’t point fingers do better #changethenarrative
4. Tito Mboweni
The Finance Minister has not done himself any favors by picking favorites. Posting a photo of an admittedly dismal situation somewhere in the country and comparing it to a town he had recently visited, he earned himself a nickname- Mr Kigali.
One thing is certain. People are not too keen on politicians using their opposition as examples when they themselves are far from perfect. Election hopefuls should learn the lesson shown here and tread carefully if they want to have any chance of winning in the upcoming battle for the top job.
