To help South African social media users bring in the new year on a fun note, the ANC politician gifted Twitter with an opportunity to make him meme by posting a photo of himself.

Unfortunately for Mbalula, Twitter was not having it because memes are not created, but are spontaneously born. Besides, as Twitter kindly pointed out, there is enough of Mbalula’s craziness already out there to last social media well into the new year.

To prove that it did not need any help from the former Minister of Police, Twitter wasted no time before sharing their own images of the leader, making it clear that memes will be made, whether the subject is willing or not.

Social media seemed quite perturbed by the fact celebrities seem to think they can take over their jobs, that is, making and sharing hilarity, and pointed fingers at other South African figures who attempted to reach viral meme status, particularly Kelly Khumalo and uMsholozi.

Some user’s with no chill whatsoever, skipped the opportunity to use the photo that Mbulala handed to them on a silver platter, and took to just insulting him anyway, without even presenting their an image, while other users played Mbalula's game and used the tweet.

Whether or not Mbulala would consider his image being used “wisely” is yet to be determined.

Perhaps the tweet was Mbalula’s way of getting ahead of the situation, hopping to control South African Twitter’s unforgiving humour, or perhaps it's an attempt to show social media that he'll be taking himself less seriously in 2019.

Over the past few years, Mbalula has publicly expressed anger at images of him being used at means which just made social media want to make them even more.
