Rats roaming through a Diepkloof food store leads to investigation

- A video posted on Facebook shows a rat walking on food in the Diepkloof branch of Food Lovers Market

- The store claimed it conducts regular inspections which yielded no indication of a cleanliness issue

- An investigation into the store's health and safety standards is now underway

The health and safety standard of the Dieplkoof branch of Food Lovers Market is currently underway following a video of a rat emerging on social media. The rat in he video is shown walking on and eating from a food display.

Nigel Meintjies who is the legal and compliance director of the store, noted that management had been made aware of a rat infestation in the fresh foods area of the store, reported EWN.

Shortly before the incident, a Facebook post revealed that the same store had been exposed to flies.

Meintjies added that the store conducts regular inspections, last of which was conducted at the end of Novemeber. The report did not show that the store had a issue with cleanliness.

“It’s important for us, as a store and as a brand, to make sure that we manage these issues as comprehensively as we can,” Meintjies said to EWN.

Briefly.co.za reported that management of the store has since requested a copy of the report from Rentokil, the company who conducted the inspection.

The video was posted by Sipho Ndhlovu who further noted that “the rats so comfortable and not scared of people as they are at home.”

Outraged customers commented that the standards of grocery stores in townships leave much to be desired and standards need to be improved and at the same level as that of stores in affluent areas.
