Johannesburg's Mayor Herman Mashaba told journalist Peter Bruce, former editor-in-chief of Business Day, Financial Mail and ABC, that free media should not be abused.
First of all, I am not a powerful person, but a simple civil servant. Secondly, I fully welcome accountability, moreover in a public service environment I operate in. The media has a crucial role to protect our new found democracy. Free media should not be abused.
Mashaba and Bruce communicated on social media and Mashaba accused Bruce of trying to discredit "our Multi Party Government".
Bruce defended himself and said he was merely holding Mashaba accountable.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Mashaba and Bruce have been at odds for a while now, and Mashaba said in a piece published by Sunday Times that Bruce has a fascination with Ramaphosa and his 'new dawn'.
