Blind man graduates with 15 distinctions beating all odds

- Judas Modala went blind in 1998

- He went back to school with the support of the Mpumalanga Department of Education

- Judas completed his BA Education degree with 15 distinctions and graduates this year

One can hardly call Mpumalanga man, Judas Modala, disabled as he has proven that he is beyond capable of succeeding at life, 20 years after losing his eyesight. Judas has defied all odds and finished his Bachelor of Education degree with an impressive 15 distinctions.

The 36-year-old was diagnosed with glaucoma and lost his sight in 1998, Briefly.co.za discovered. Judas had to drop out of school just after finishing Grade 11.

"No one can imagine the trauma of waking up one day and learning that they are now blind. It sure changes everything, ” Judas said to African News Agency.

After losing his sight, Judas’ first instinct was to find a job in order to make ends meet. He approached the Mpumalanga Department of Education to help him find employment but the department, recognizing his potential, believed that the best thing for Judas to do was to finish school.

In 2012, Judas’ difficult journey towards success continued as he started his matric from home relying on textbooks used by conventional schools. He did not have a teacher and was helped only by his family who used software to record curriculum information. Judas says it was difficult but he was eager to pass Grade 12.

After passing his matric, the department helped him get placement at the University of Free State to study Education. Judas was awarded a full bursary from the Provincial Government and finished his degree in record time.

Judas graduates this year and his family and South Africa could not be more proud.

Judas studied Education as hoping to challenge government's lack of facillities available to visually impaired students so that other students don’t have to struggle to access education and do not have to feel discouraged or unmotivated.
