This question generated plenty of debate. Some readers were sympathetic to the man and said he should be forgiven. However, others insisted that a crime is a crime.

We compile some of the readers' views below.

A reader referred to it as "a case of necessity" and suggested that the man should therefore be set free.

Some felt that the man must be unemployed, desperate, and committed to his son's education. For these reasons, they felt he should be forgiven.

However, other readers felt that a crime is a crime and the man must therefore face the law.

For others, the man could simply have asked for assistance instead of resorting to stealing.
