A grade 1 learner's pensive facial expression on his first day at school has left South Africans on social media in stitches.

@_bornonamonday, a man based in Bloemfontein, shared a snap of the little boy on Twitter yesterday, Briefly.co.za gathered.

He accompanied with the caption, "My nephew knows it’s going to be a long 12 years."

In a follow-up tweet, the bemused uncle joked that his nephew was already missing his nap time.

The snap went viral, amassing almost 5,000 likes and over 1,500 retweets. It also received well over 1,700 replies from equally bemused tweeps.
