New #charcoalchallenge divides social media: is it racist or not?

A batch of videos have been shared via social media recently showing off the #charcoalchallenge.

The challenge involves a group of topless men placing an empty bag of charcoal over their heads.

After some shaking around, the participants remove the bags to reveal black faces.

The Robbie Wessels song, Bobjan, can be heard playing in the background, which relates to a man who felt he was a baboon.

The above challenge video has gone viral and hundreds have commented.

While many found it to be hilarious, others aren’t impressed with the alleged racist undertone. recently reported on the popular #Idibala challenges as well.

It seems South Africans are up for any challenge 2019 throws at them.
