US vloggers are changing the way the world sees differently-abled bodies with their inspirational video blog Squirmy and Grubs. Hannah Aylward and Shane Burcaw started the vlogs with the hopes that it would help change the way people viewed disability, after realising that people often assumed that Hannah was Shane's nurse and not his girlfriend.
The YouTube channel was created in 2018 and is an adorable and relaxed way for the couple to share the experiences and normalise their relationship dynamic.
It all began when Hannah Aylward, a student in her twenties from Minnesota, saw a documentary about Pennsylvania man, Shane Burcaw and how he copes with a genetic disorder that has impaired his voluntary muscle movements called Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
She decided she had to get into contact with him and the pair began calling and texting regularly before Hannah decided to travel to Pennsylvania to meet him.
Shane says he knew from the moment she got in touch with him, that he wanted to get to know her better.
They immediately hit it off and decided to commit themselves to a long-distance relationship. The couple now live together happily in Minnesota
Shane has also written a book called Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse which will be available in stores in April.
