Elana Barkuizen, the Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke teacher who was suspended after she shared a photo of Grade 1 learners who appeared to be separated by race, has presented her version of events.
At a press conference, a tearful Barkhuizen said that she had taken the picture but that she was not the one who had separated the children. The photo caused a stir on social media where it went viral and drew strong criticism.
The school suspended Barkhuizen and released a statement in which they asserted that the photo did not represent the school's values.
Barkhuizen, supported by trade union Solidarity, is challenging the school's decision to suspend her, with the trade union asserting that it was unlawful.
"My job is not politics, but teaching," said Barkhuizen.
Her statement divided social media, with some supporting her and saying the wrong teacher was punished, while others were unconvinced by her claims.
Barkhuizen, however, reasserted her commitment to fighting back against her suspension and her online treatment.
"I will not be told what my worth is by people who do not know me. I will embark on this journey. I will clear my name," she said. "I will take on these people with power and I shall win."
