Black Schweizer-Reneke parent speaks out in support of Barkhuizen

- A parent took to Twitter to defend Elena Barkhuizen 

- They said the wrong teacher had been punished 

- This comes after Barkhuizen announced that she would fight the suspension

A black parent of one of the Schweizer-Reneke pupils has spoken up in defense of suspended teacher Elena Barkhuizen.

Under the username 'doctor_maolwane', the parent anonymously took to Twitter to offer a defense of the teacher. According to the parent, Barkhuizen was unfairly suspended. 

"I am a parent of a kid in the class of the incident," doctor_maolwane wrote, "I can come to account for my version of events anonymous ly if its acceptable."

The parent accused the school of "playing education dpt" by suspending Barkhuizen. They also said that Barkhuizen did not deserve to be disciplined and said that the actual teacher of the class was one "Mrs Olivier".

This comes after Barkhuizen was suspended following a photo she shared on social media that appeared to show Grade 1 learners separated by race. The post went viral and caused a furor. The trade union Solidarity stepped in to support Barkhuizen and has also charged the DA youth leader, Luyolo Mpithi, with fueling racial tension by retweeting the photo with Elena Barkhuizen's name.

Barkhuizen said in a public statement this week that she would fight the suspension and clear her name. The school had previously denounced Barkhuizen's actions and said that the photo did not represent its ethos.
