SAPS cuts hijackers' day short – video shows dramatic high speed chase

Criminals thought they had pulled off a successful hijacking in Johannesburg but were later chased down in dramatic scenes and arrested by police officers.

A group of criminals hijacked a white Volkswagen Jetta in Yeoville and felt they made a successful getaway.

To their surprise, police officers received a signal that the men were travelling through Rosebank and tracked them down.

Dramatic video footage shows the pursuit in peak traffic.

The police vehicle tailed the Jetta at a traffic intersection.

The driver of the Jetta realises and overtakes cars to go over the red traffic light.

Undeterred, the policemen closely follow the Jetta as motorists swerve to give way.

Shots are fired but the Jetta driver soon misjudges a turn and the car crashes into a fence.

The police officers exit their vehicle in quick time to arrest the group of criminals.

The video was shared via Facebook and proved very popular as it was liked more than 800 times.
