Rafiq Fisher took his passion for Kombis and turned it into a very successful business. Today he has a small fleet of 'pimped out' Kombis that people hire for special occasions like weddings and school dances.
Rafiq Fisher has a passion for cars, and Volkswagen Kombis in particular. It's like he looks at these vehicles in a way that we'll never understand.
The Athlone-based Kombi enthusiast managed to successfully take his passion and turn it into a business.
A report by IOL News indicates that Rafiq said he was surrounded by Kombis for as long as he can remember. When he was 17, his dad gave him a Kombi that had been in the family for 42 years - a Volkswagen Bay Window Kombi.
My dad, Brian, had Kombis all his life and he repaired and restored it. As kids we used to go camping in it. So when I turned 17 and my father gave it to me, I too restored it, and put a V8 motor engine into it - a racing motor. I raced with that Kombi on Killarney race track. Later I refurbished it to compete at car shows.
Over the years I fully customised it with a 55” plasma television, an Xbox, a PlayStation and a big sound system. Today it has 18” chrome rims.
Now that's how you pimp a ride!
Four years ago Rafiq decided to hire out his Kombi for matric dances and weddings. And so Apollo Kombi Hire was born.
It has grown so popular that Rafiq could expand, and he now has 4 Kombis, all of them booked in advance.
It’s especially liked by young people for matric balls and parties. There’s a lot of entertainment inside it, especially the big sound system. But people also like the Kombis for weddings because one has eight seats inside, so it accommodates bridal parties too.
Rafiq wants to grow even bigger and personally wants to collect more Kombis. Briefly.co.za gathered that his dream is to one day own a Maisto Kombi.
Well, we've seen that what Rafiq dreams, Rafiq accomplishes. It's only a matter of time.
