- SAPS and the Hawks are investigating Nomfundo Sambo, who claimed to be Mabuza's niece and accused him of putting a hit out on businessman Fred Daniel
- Daniel and Mabuza had been involved in lengthy legal battles
- The investigation has taken unexpected turns, with Sambo due to appear in court today on charges of possessing burglary tools
There have been accusations of abnormalities in the investigations into Nomfundo Sambo.
Sambo, who claimed to be David Mabuza's niece, had written a sworn statement last year in which she accused the deputy president of putting a hit out on businessman Fred Daniel. Mabuza was allegedly in a legal battle with Daniel.
Sambo will appear in court today on charges of possession of burglary tools. She has also previously been accused of fraud. A case of defamation has also been opened against her regarding her comments about Mabuza.
However, one witness told City Press that they believed there was something suspicious about the way the matter was being investigated. The witness claimed to have made a statement to investigators, but said that the statement was ignored and that the detectives made their own statement.
They were allegedly investigating the origins of two payments to Sambo totaling R750 000. The payments were made shortly after Sambo made her accusations against Mabuza.
She claimed that she had found Mabuza's diary while cleaning his office. She alleges that it contained Fred Daniel's name, location and cellphone number.
Daniel and Mabuza have been locked in legal battles for months, with Daniel attempting to get a protection order against the deputy president. He says that Mabuza ordered government officials to sabotage his business.
Daniel has since charged Mabuza with conspiracy to commit murder. It appears he thought Sambo's testimony would strengthen his case, but many now doubt Sambo's credibility.
