Before smartphones and hashtags: video shows kids with self-made carts

Technology and social media play such a big part of our lives but one throwback video served as a wonderful reminder of how impoverished South African children grew up in years gone by.

It’s hard to imagine life without our smartphones, televisions or modern conveniences.

Children have become just as reliant on technology as adults have but there was a time when this wasn’t the case.

In years gone by, children used innovation and creativity to entertain themselves as opposed to watching television and playing video games.

A video shared by Twitter user, @AdvBarryRoux, showed local children driving self-made carts.

The kids can be seen driving downhill in their carts while performing fancy turns and tricks.

The video proved a hit on social media and reminded many of their childhood.

Some tweeps revelled in their past but were also saddened that the youth of today aren’t able to experience it.
