Marvel’s Black Panther broke records when it was released early last year and Wakanda fever took over the world. The record-breaking film has been nominated for seven Oscars, but not everyone is entirely convinced that its deserving.
It managed to make history in South Africa by becoming the highest grossing film ever. Briefly.co.za learned the movie made more than R100 million. And, it only took the movie five weeks to become the top-grossing film in South Africa. Internationally, the Black Panther movie, which has been described as a game changer for superhero movies, managed to reach $1 billion.
The MCU film earned seven Oscar nominations, including a Best Picture nod. This is the first time a superhero movie has been nominated for the prestigious award. The announcement was made on Tuesday and while many celebrated, others questioned if the movie was truly Oscar worthy.
According to TimesLive, the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige said he was very proud of the achievement.
