In a typically South African scene, the man driving a taxi became a passenger in the vehicle, after the cops pulled him over for not having a valid driver’s licence.

When police officers pulled a taxi over and discovered that its driver did not possess a valid driving license, they refused to let the taxi leave, Briefly.co.za found.

But then the situation got weird and the taxi driver simply moved into the back and became a passenger as if nothing happened. Another passenger, frustrated because he was already late for work, took over operations and drove the distance from Sandton to Midrand.

When the newly appointed driver reached the taxi rank in Sandton, the original driver once again took over.

The passengers of the taxi were shook, realising that they had been driving with an unlicensed driver. One passenger, Thatego, shared the experience with Twitter trying to make sense of the whole situation.

When a Twitter user asked why the driver didn’t just move to the front passenger seat, Thatego laughed, saying that even that didn’t happen.

The hilarious situation led to other users sharing their own personal experiences of being in taxi.

Apparently, when the police stopped the taxi that her mother was in, another passenger asked the taxi if anyone had a valid PDP (Professional Driving Permit) licence. Her mother did, fortunately, and proceeded to get into the driver’s seat and drove the taxi. The police, unsure whether was a good idea, followed the taxi.

The story brought up feelings of nostalgia for some users. Debi, remembering the intense pressure placed on passenger’s in a taxi, reminisced about how she used to get anxious sitting in the front of a taxi because she wasn’t good at calculating numbers and struggled to work out the change, a responsibility often bestowed on the front passenger of taxis.
