A video has been shared on social media which showed two male learners brawling while their peers watched the horrific scene.
One of the learners is then seen hitting the other out cold and he stormed off afterwards. Briefly.co.za learned the incident reportedly took place at Hoërskool President in the south of Johannesburg on Tuesday.
TimesLIVE reported MEC Panyaza Lesufi paid a visit to the school and has since released a statement.
Lefusi said it was unclear what sparked the confrontation, but four learnes involved were suspended immediately after the incident took place.
He added that he feared it would spark more racial tension since the fight took place between a white and a black boy.
“I’m very reluctant to use race and I’m also reluctant to enter the domain of who is right and who is wrong," Lefusi said.
According to the MEC's statement, the two learners allegedly bumped into each other and ended up in a heated verbal exchange.
Lefusi added the preliminary information stated that the beaten learner took off his belt before the video was filmed, and he was then seen on the footage holding it above his head.
However, the other boy got the upper hand and ended up punching him out. After the MEC's visit, the provincial department of education provided additional information.
According to the report, the victim confronted the other boy after he threw a ball at a grade eight learner.
All four suspended learners would face a disciplinary hearing on Thursday, 31 January.
