A recent video shared via social media revealed the damage done to cell phone stations by thieves.

In the footage, it is noticeable to see that all parts have been stripped.

The narrator of the video confirms the theft of all equipment, power cables and feeders.

It is then the cell phone operator’s responsibility to replace the relevant equipment.

The high cost of the equipment and labour intensive exercise would presumably cost a small fortune to replace on a regular basis.

South Africa Live uploaded the video via Facebook and estimated that 60 sites are stripped per month on average.

Their caption included the following note: “Now you know why data rates are so expensive. How do you keep a network running?”

The post has attracted 205 comments thus far but not everyone sympathised with the affected companies.

Briefly.co.za noted that many people raised issues regarding insurance and security measures.
