- A man was filmed walking into a police station and tried to attack a policeman with a knife
- The officer maintained his composure and calmly persuaded the man to hand the knife over to him
- The cop then shows incredible compassion as he reaches out to hug the attacker and the video footage has gone viral
Police officer, Anirut Malee, was going through the motions of an ordinary day at the police station in Bangkok.
Out of nowhere, a man entered the station wielding a knife.
Malee maintained composure instead of reaching for his gun.
He managed to persuade the man to hand the knife over to him.
The attacker can be seen puffing his chest out, seemingly still wound up.
Malee approaches the man, stretches his arms out and gives him a big hug.
Footage of the incident was shared via Facebook by the Weeral group recently, but the incident occurred more than a year ago.
The video also includes the back story, which explains that the assailant was a musician but worked as a security guard for 3 days without compensation.
In addition, his guitar was stolen and it all became too much to bear.
Malee sympathised with the man and offered him his own guitar as a gift. He also suggested that they have lunch together.
The video has gone viral with nearly 3 000 comments made.
Many heaped praise on the officer for showing composure and compassion for the man’s desperate situation.
John Hall said: “Very rare indeed most cops act like citizens owe them something!! This guy has heart and should be moved up a rank or two!!”
Maiyer Vang commented, “I've mentioned this a year ago. The guy with the knife had the handle of the knife facing the policeman. He wanted the policeman to kill him. Notice when he handed the knife to the policeman he stepped back and exposed his chest "stab me." But instead the policeman threw the knife away and hugged the fellow and he burst into tears. Making a living in a developing country like Thailand is hard. Not to mention anywhere else.”
Briefly.co.za noted that opinions differ greatly as to whether the man’s aim was to attack the officer or if he wanted to hand the knife for the cop to stab him.
Officer Malee thanked the Weeral group for sharing the video and did not note any incorrect detail on his own Facebook account.
