After reminding South Africans on social media of the ANC’s corruption, a Twitter user called Mashaba “Zille’s garden boy”.

Mashaba angered some social media users after commenting on a heartbreaking photograph of young school walking through waist-high water to get to school. The photo was shared by a Twitter user who hoped to remind South Africans about the struggles young people endure to get an education.

Mashaba, however, used the opportunity to fire shots at the ruling party. Referring to the ANC’s legacy as leaders of the liberation struggle and their current downfall following the state capture inquiries, Mashaba said: “Just imagine justifying theft of public money because you were oppressed for 100 years. These poor communities you are stealing from were also oppressed.”

A Twitter user responded to Mashaha asking, “w[h]at about the 100's of years ur party enslaved us?”

Other users, however, felt differently, asserting that neigther paarty should be considered based on their legacys alone.
