A video showing a self-driving Volkswagen Polo has got local car enthusiasts talking.

South Africans were stunned to see footage of a Polo driving without anyone in the driver seat.

The video starts off by showing the driver getting out of the car.

He then proceeds to watch from a distance as the car propels itself forward, before coming to a standstill once a suitable parking spot had been found.

Social media users have watched the video more than 80 000 times as it was shared by South Africa Live via Facebook.

Briefly.co.za gathered that many were impressed and theories differed regarding the secret behind it.

Jaco du Preez jokingly said, “Its nice, I send my one to the shops to buy bread, milk and cooldrink.”
Deon Van Schalkwyk then added, “Just check out the front bumper. I wonder how many of them he had to replace before this video!!”
Waleed Dollie commented, “He has a remote start and the car was in 1st gear.”
Muhammad Suleman feared black magic was at play as he said, “Tokoloshi.”
