- A man killed 2 birds with 1 stone when he gave a beggar purpose along with an opportunity to earn an income
- The beggar is now tasked with collecting rubbish and keeping a busy road clear in Cape Town
- The man shared the initiative via social media and encouraged others to do the same and contribute to the cause
Steven Goodill noted 2 things at a road close to his home – a gentleman begging regularly and an ever-increasing pile of rubbish.
Goodill came up with an innovative plan to kill 2 birds with 1 stone by offering the beggar, known as Jimmy, a chance to earn some income for every bag of rubbish he collects.
The road in question stretches from the Blue route intersection to the M3 freeway.
Goodill took to Facebook to make others aware of his new initiative.
He called on others to offer Jimmy encouragement or a contribution when they pass him by.
He adds in his post that others would scoff at the idea but Jimmy welcomed the idea of earning an income.
Briefly.co.za noted that Goodill shared an update on the initial post as per below.
Facebook users love the initiative as Goodill received more than 100 positive comments in response to the post.
Brenda Doherty White said, “Great idea. We'll done guys. That area under the bridge has definitely seen better days lately.”
Lauren Hansen added: “Fantastic initiative. It's people like you that make a difference. And good on Jimmy!”
Jenny Milne praised both Jimmy and Goodill when he said, “What a great idea. We need more Jimmy's around East London. And definitely more men like Steven who take action. Well done.”
