Technology is an amazing thing, but when something goes wrong it causes total mayhem. This happened on Wednesday when a global Instagram malfunction occurred. Zipho Mthembu of Distruction Boyz, lost more than 200 000 followers in the blink of an eye.
There were a number of accounts that lost thousands of followers and this caused a lot of unhappiness and even anger with Instagram users.
Briefly.co.za learnt that those who were hit hardest were the likes of Ariana Grande and Kylie Jenner losing millions of followers.
Two-thirds of Goldmax’s followers were lost. This sparked the star to make his feelings known to Instagram and making a plea for them to sort their mistakes out.
There is speculation that it all started when Instagram made the decision to start a clean-up operation in order to delete all spam, automated and fake accounts, this is according to Elle. This boils down to the accounts that were deleted could have possibly been paid-for followers.
A statement was issued by Instagram on Thursday stating that they were aware of the problem and were pulling out all the stops to rectify it as soon as possible.
Twitter has felt the brunt of this and went into a meltdown with many saying they would boycott the service should their numbers not be restored.
