- The ANC has floated the idea of asking its members to chip in toward a monthly fee
- This comes after a new bill will limit how much political parties can receive from donations
- However, most citizens on social media slammed the proposal
Briefly.co.za asked South Africans online what they thought of the ANC's new plan to charge a R50 monthly membership fee.
In true Mzansi fashion, social media had a lot to say about the proposal.
Here's what people thought of the scheme.
Most of the reactions to the proposal were negative, with many people wondering how the ANC expected them to be able to afford the fees,
"But I'm not working where should I get money to fund their expensive hotels?" wrote one Facebook user, Lehlohonolo Mohapi.
Ralph Mdluli expressed a similar sentiment when he posted a reply, saying, "So the Anc are not satisfied with their loot, now the ppl who suffered fr their looting must hand over their survival monies!"
Concerns about looting were a common refrain. Ironically, one of the reasons the ANC gave for the membership fee proposal was that it may reduce the risk of corruption and state capture.
However, citizens pointed out that there was no guarantee that the party would not loot the money received from the membership fees. It has been estimated that the plan would bring in just under R600 million a year to the ANC.
Makutu Sello summed up a lot of people's comments when he wrote, " only Fools will Donate to this people." He hadded that wealthy ANC figures like billionaire Cyril Ramaphosa should put more money into the organization.
