On Monday, 18 February, an elderly Sweet Waters flat resident decided to go for a swim at an unprotected beach in Amanzimtoti.
However, the lady would have drowned was it not for the swift actions of a cyclist and homeless man.
The elderly lady was allegedly pummeled by the waves before the strong current pulled her in. According to a social media post by Daiwa Anglers Fan Club South Africa, cyclist Reiner Kuperus and homeless man Thami Kwela's attention were caught by frantic residents shouting from a balcony.
The men's attention were directed to the drowning woman and without hesitation, they ran to get her out of the water.
"The two pulled the elderly lady up the beach and put her into a stable position so she could breathe! The crucial call was made to emergency services and first to the scene was richard Miller from accelerated services who quickly stabilized the woman," he post read.
Briefly.co.za gathered eyewitness Ajay Ramlall posted photos and videos of the rescue on the Facebook page.
"It only takes a second for anyone to become a hero .. it’s when you decide to help anyone regardless of your own life," he wrote.
The elderly woman is stable and she was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital following the incident.
