On this day, 18 years ago, South African music legend, Miriam Makeba, was nominated for a Grammy.

It is not every day that a South African artist is nominated for a Grammy Award. Miriam was a phenomenal songstress who made Mzansi proud time and time again.

Briefly.co.za remembers Miriam today for her prestigious Grammy Award nomination in the category of World Music Album.

She received the nomination based on her album Homeland at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, USA, on the 18th of February 2001.

During her lifetime, Miriam won countless awards for her music and her activism which earned her the title of ‘Africa’s first superstar’.
