The flight left ahead of schedule and after take-off, the flight crew realised there was an issue with one of the aircraft systems. To be on the safe side, they opted to turn around and head back to Cape Town International, Briefly.co.za found.

Upon closer inspection, the crew learnt that the plane was over its maximum landing weight. To reduce weight, the plane had to maintain a holding pattern over Robben Island, burning fuel as the plane was not designed to dump fuel.
