A 30-year-old woman has been suspended from her teaching position at Blackhill Primary School after allegedly locking a grade 1 pupil in a strongroom. The teacher reportedly locked the pupil away and forgot, leaving the learner there overnight.
The Department of Education in Mpumalanga has placed a teacher on suspension today for allegedly locking a grade 1 child away in a strongroom overnight.
Departmental spokesman for the region confirmed the incident, commenting that:
"The female teacher, 30, at Blackhill Primary School in Emalahleni allegedly locked a grade 1 learner in a school's strongroom and forgot him. The learner was left in that strongroom the whole night."
According to TimesLIVE, the boy's parents had been frantic when the pupil had not returned home at his usual time on Wednesday.
They had searched for him but had eventually reported the child missing to the police:
"The following morning parents were told that the teacher had forgotten the learner in the strongroom,"
Briefly.co.za gathered that the department is currently investigating the incident and has offered counselling to the child and his family:
"The department condemns this and will do everything possible to ensure that justice is served."
