South Africans have honed in on religious leader after the resurrection story of Pastor Alph Lukau went viral this week.
Lukau gained attention, not all of which is good, after a video surfaced online which showed him raising a man from the dead.
However, the is not the first religious leader who raised eyebrows in South Africa. So, Briefly.co.za decided to take a look at five other pastors and prophets who are no strangers to controversy.
1. Prophet Shepherd Bushiri
Now, what would a controversial pastors' list be without Major One. Prophet Shepherd Bushiri is arguably one of the most popular, and most controversial pastors, in South Africa.
Controversies range from being accused of faking miracles to getting arrested for alleged money laundering and fraud.
2. Pastor Mboro
Sjo... we're not sure where to begin with the controversial pastor. Pastor Paseka 'Mboro' Motsoeneng has done it all - he once claimed he went to heaven, where he took photos with his smartphone.
And, that's not all - he also reportedly visited hell, where he killed the devil and rid the world of his evil. Ya neh, great stuff.
In a now deleted Facebook post, Mboro explained how he single handedly defeated Lucifer himself.
3. Pastor Timothy Omotoso
Pastor Timothy Omotoso has trended on social media several times over the past couple of months.
The senior Jesus Dominion International preacher and his co-accused are standing trail for shares ranging from racketeering to sexual assault. Their case has been highly publicized, with his followers showing him unwavering support.
4. Prophet Lethebo Rabalago
In 2016, Prophet Lethebo Rabalago made headlines after he was photographed spraying his congregation with pesticide.
He has since been dubbed the 'Doom pastor' and he even appeared in court on grounds that he endangered the lives of the church members.
Rabalago claimed the Doom could heal his followers and even get rid of demons. However, the court did not find his reason valid and he was found guilty, a verdict wel
5. Prophet Penuel Mnguni
Prophet Penuel Mnguni is notorious for the 'food' he gives his congregation to eat. Mnguni has been dubbed the 'snake pastor', for obvious reasons.
Mnguni first gained attention when he fed his church members snakes, which he claimed turned into chocolate, News24 reported.
However, it does not end there. He has since made headlines after he told his congregation to strip down before praying to him.
In 2018, Briefly.co.za reported Mnguni fed his congregation dog meat and frogs, which he claimed cured HIV/ Aids and cancer.
