- A 17-year-old student has been convicted of murdering a teacher in the North West
- This comes after a spate of school violence in the province
- A 14-year-old was also murdered by a classmate and a teacher was assaulted by a parent
The teenager arrested for killing a teacher in the North West Province has been given a sentence of 10 years in prison.
The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to the crime.
The student stabbed Gadimang Mokolobate, a 24-year-old maths teacher at Ramotshere Secondary School.
He reportedly murdered Mokolobate with a butcher knife. The teenager entered an exam venue where Mokolabate was invigilating and then attacked her, according to the Sunday Times.
This was the second violent assault to take place in a North West school this week. A 14-year-old was also fatally stabbed by a classmate earlier this week, while a teacher was attacked by a parent at Leema Primary School at Tlhatlhaganyane.
In response to the assaults, the provincial MEC for education, Sello Lehari, said that a safety seminar was being organised to find ways to improve the safety of pupils and staff at North West schools.
Sadtu also said action would be taken following the spate of violence, saying that they "view this in an extremely serious light".
A spokesperson for the union said that they had received numerous reports of school violence in recent months.
