- A video surfaced online of a woman verbally and physically abusing a grandmother
- A public outcry followed the video going viral on social media
- Many people have called for the woman's arrest
Calls mount for the arrest of a 31-year-old woman who abused a 63-year-old grandmother.
The abuse was captured on video, which has surfaced online.
In the clip, the woman can be seen yelling at the gogo and holding her underneath a running tap.
The abuse reportedly occurred in Sabantu near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.
The KZN social development department has since intervened and is looking after the grandmother. She is reportedly staying in a facility for the elderly for the time being.
Additionally, the gogo has opened a case of assault and emotional abuse against the woman. Social workers involved in the case have asked police to investigate the case.
The video was shared on social media, where it sparked a public outcry, with many people calling for the woman's arrest. People have argued that holding the grandmother under the running tap amounted to waterboarding, a harsh torture technique.
Weziwe Thusi, social development MEC, condemned the incident but praised the way social workers handled the case. Thusi says the grandmother was given immediate assistance and soon taken to a safe location.
However, Thusi added that the crime was particularly disturbing because it was targeted at an elderly person.
"All they need from young people is care, love and respect and not abuse," said Thusi.
