- Her arrest comes after a video showing her abusing the grandmother went viral on social media
- Another relative claims there are three protection orders out against the woman
- Additionally, the grandmother's niece claims to be the one who shared the video
The 31-year-old woman who abused a 63-year-old grandmother in a viral video has been arrested.
This comes after a public outcry and widespread calls for her detainment.
In the clip, the woman can be seen verbally and physically abusing the gogo, as well as holding her beneath a running tap.
The woman has since been charged with assault and is set to appear in court later today. Reportedly, there were previous protection orders out against the woman.
Following the assault, social workers reportedly intervened and took the grandmother to a secure location. She will stay at an elderly care facility for the time being.
The niece of the abused grandmother claims to be the one who shared the video which ultimately led to the arrest.
However, the niece expressed remorse that she had not revealed the abuse sooner. She added that she was reluctant to share the video for fear of her family's reaction, and also said the woman who abused the grandmother was in control of the gogo's finances.
Weziwe Thusi, MEC for Social Development, has condemned the abuse but praised the social workers who assisted the grandmother. Thusi says they assisted in opening the case of emotional and physical abuse against the woman.
