80-year-old woman enrols in school, hopes to become a teacher

- An 80-year-old woman, Maria Obonyo, has decided to enrol into Grade one after successfully completing pre -school

- Obonyo revealed that she enrolled in school so she can learn to read and write

- The woman also added that she wants to be a teacher in future

People decide to get an education for various reasons; for kids, going to school is a normal process in their lives. However, it is strange to see elderly individuals who want to enrol in school.

Briefly.co.za has gathered the report of an 80-year-old woman, Maria Obonyo, who has enrolled to start Grade one.

80-year-old woman enrolls in school, hopes to become a teacher

The 80-year-old farmer revealed to Daily Monitor that she decided to get an education after all her relatives passed on and there was nobody to look after her.

Obonyo added that she would also love to attend the university and become a teacher.

She said: “I decided to enrol at the school because I lost all my relatives and there was nobody to take care of me. I am determined to study until I graduate from Makerere University as a teacher.”

Daily Monitor also reported that the aged woman decided to attend school after facing ridicule from people and also because she wants to learn how to read and write.

The director of the school, Stella Tayona, revealed that Obonyo had enrolled in her school since baby class and that she graduated at the top of the class. She also added that the school foots most of Maria's bills and that help is welcome from well wishers.

“She is a hardworking pupil who never misses classes and is social to fellow classmates”, Tayona said.

This would serve as an inspiration to other elderly ones who have given up on education. Congrats to Maria.

The young girl took to her Twitter page to share the good news and also show off her achievements.

According to her, she was encouraged to post her success on social media after a friend urged her to show the world how great she is.
