The red sea in Durban? Mystery pollutant causes a wave of questions

There have been reports of an unknown red substance in the water off the coast of Durban.

The substance was spotted mostly off Durban's Battery Beach.

Additionally, people who had swum in the water near the substance have claimed that they later became ill as a result. 

The issue has since been reported to the environmental health department.

Durban's councillor for Ward 26, Martin Meyer, has asked anyone who believes they became sick because of the substance to contact him.

Meyer blamed the red substance on pollution, saying it was a sign of a lack of respect for the environment.

However, no company or person has been singled out as responsible for the 'pollution'.
