The Hawks conducted a search and seizure at the Rustenburg Local Municipality on the 8th of March, and mayor Mpho Khunou is not impressed or happy with it. He called the raid 'dramatic and unnecessary'.
Mayor Mpho Khunou made it clear that he is unhappy with the Hawks and a raid that they conducted at the Rustenburg Local Municipality.
According to the mayor, the municipality has been very cooperative, and the raid was not necessary.
It was a bit dramatic and unnecessary, especially considering the fact that the municipality has been cooperating. This heavy-handed approach by the Hawks where they are looking for things that we are not responsible for, that is something that remains quite baffling.
But we will take that up with the relevant authorities.
The raid was in connection with claims of tender fraud of about R85 million, according to a report by IOL News.
The claims involve Bonakude Consulting, who dealt with the review of financials; Ultimate Dynamic and CMS Water Engineers.
Mayor Khunou says the biggest issue was with a tender that was awarded in 2018.
The major issue was the R85 million tender awarded to CMS Water Engineers for the Bospoort Dam construction material in May 2018. Only R25 million was used and a physical verification of the materials was done on 26 February 2019.
Briefly.co.za learnt that the municipality claims it gave the Hawks all the files they had in connection with Bonakude and CMS Water.
These documents of which the search and seizure was obtained were in actual fact already in the possession of both the Klerksdorp Commercial Crime Unit as well as the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Unit.
The mayor added that it is concerning that Ultimate Dynamic was targeted for a search and rescue when its contract isn't managed by the municipality but by the Rustenburg Water Services Trust.
