Rainer Schimpf is one lucky guy, Not only did he survive almost getting swallowed by a whale, but he now also now 'inside knowledge' that no one else has. Photos show how Rainer was swallowed by a Bryde’s Whale before he resurfaced moments later.
Rainer Schimpf had a close encounter that few people can boast with. He had a first-row seat to the inside of a whale's mouth.
The 51-year-old narrowly escaped being swallowed by a Bryde’s Whale in Algoa Bay. Rainer has worked as a dive tour operator in Mzansi for more than 15 years and never experienced anything like this.
Photos that captured the dramatic event showed Rainer hanging out of the whale's mouth before it went under the water.
Fortunately, the whale realised its mistake and released him, along with what felt to him like tons of water.
Rainer and his team were set to document a sardine run when the whale accidentally tried to swallow him.
News24 reported on how grateful Rainer was when the whale released him. He joked about how he went from observer to someone with inside knowledge.
It happened extremely fast, from an observer, I suddenly became an inside man, inside a whale. It gave me a great connection to the whale which I don’t think anyone else had had before.
I now have inside knowledge of a whale which nobody else has.
Briefly.co.za learnt that the now popular video showing Rainer's close encounter has been shared more than 700 000 times, and views keep increasing.
