The State Security Agency (SSA) has alleged that Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane illegally got hold of a classified report.
According to the SSA, Mkhwebane received the information without first getting a subpoena.
The agency has since opened a criminal case against Mkhwebane.
The SSA accuses Mkhwebane of unlawfully receiving a document regarding accusations that the SSA engaged in operations aimed at undermining SARS.
Additionally, some government insiders have reportedly alleged that Mkhwebane's pursuit of the report was politically motivated and that Mkhwebane was striving to undermine Cyril Ramaphosa and Pravin Gordhan. However, no evidence has yet emerged to support this claim.
According to the City Press, Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba initially offered to give Mkhwebane the document, but with certain key information redacted, such as the names of those involved.
However, Mkhwebane reportedly demanded to see the entire report.
