A grade 9 student at Hyde Park High, Zoe Chibuye, was recently punished by a teacher for wearing her afro to school.
Zoe was late for school on a Friday and was waiting in line to sign in for her tardiness.
When Zoe was signing in, the teacher in charge handed out a punishment for the grade 9’s hair.

"She immediately said I have detention. I said, "why?" She said my hair is distracting and attention-grabbing."
Briefly.co.za found out that Zoe usually wears her hair in braids, but had decided to wear her hair natural and tied back for this particular day of school.
Zoe’s mom, Gloria Chibuye, was completely shocked when her daughter told her why she had received detention.
"She usually has it braided. And then one week she has it out she gets detention," Gloria said.
eNCA reported that officials from the Gauteng Education Department are currently investigating the incident.
What Zoe experienced holds similarities to a story that made headlines in 2016, where a learner from Pretoria was punished for her natural afro hair.
