South Africans have been debating Hyde Park High's decision to punish a learner for her afro hairstyle. Veteran actress, Florence Masebe, has joined the debate and called for a national hair policy to be implemented.
Florence said that the treatment the young pupil received was 'unacceptable'. She said that school policies on hair need to be regulated so that we don't keep facing the same issues over and over again.
Briefly.co.za reported that a Grade 9 school pupil was recently put into detention because of her hair. Zoe Chibuye was reportedly punished by a teacher for wearing her afro to school. Zoe was late for school on a Friday and was waiting in line to sign in for her tardiness. When Zoe was signing in, the teacher in charge handed out a punishment for the Grade 9 learner's hair.
The child claimed that the teacher complained that the hair was 'distracting and attention-grabbing'.
