Many South Africans felt sorry for the man in the situation, but found the story hilarious. One Facebook user, Bulee Mzilikasi, said she thought it sounded like the plot of a low-budget movie.

However, some said that the man was lucky that this happened now and not later on in the relationship, with one user writing, "Take the positive part bra…she showed what type of person she is."

Others, however, sided with the woman. Thandi Maerman, for example, said, "Clearly she wanted to get married and the guy throwing surprise parties wasn't ready."

One user event on to argue that the real winner in this situation was the man who proposed.

"Wow, the one who proposed saved money for catering, decor and beverages," wrote Nxumalo Njabulo. "Give that man a Bells."
