Six women have tragically been killed and about 50 other people have been injured in an accident on the N8 about 15 kilometres outside of Bloemfontein. BrieflySA has learned from IOL.co.za that the bus the people were travelling on rear-ended a stationary truck on Monday morning.
ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring said that paramedics from various emergency services arrived on the scene and found that the bus’s one side had been entirely ripped open, both the bus and the truck were on the side of the road.
Paramedics quickly conducted a survey of the scene and several injured persons were found lying next to the bus. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that six women had already died from their injuries. The women were declared dead on the scene.
Paramedics reported that approximately 50 other people were injured during the accident. These patients’ injuries ranged from minor to critical. One patient was airlifted by the Free State Provincial Services Helicopter to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Paramedics treated all those injured before they were sent to various local hospitals for further medical treatment.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been established, local authorities are on the scene and have launched an investigation.
