- The EFF has apologised for some of its supporters who removed ANC posters
- This comes after a video showing the supporters vandalising ANC posters went viral
- Julius Malema has called the vandalism an act of "stupidity"
A video recently surfaced online showing EFF supporters tearing down rival political parties' posters.
This is major violation of the Electoral Code of Conduct and could result in the IEC slapping the EFF with a large fine and even forfeiting their R200 000 election deposit.
Julius Malema has since condemned the destruction of posters.
In the clip (which blew up on social media after being shared by Fikile Mbalula), EFF supporters can be seen tearing down ANC posters. The incident reportedly took place in Mpumalanga.
In response to the video, EFF leader, Julius Malema, apologised and described the vandalism as an act of "stupidity", according to The South African. The EFF also released an official statement condemning the poster removal.
Neither the ANC nor the IEC has officially commented on the incident or said whether they would be taking action to sanction the EFF. However, the destruction of party resources is taken seriously by the IEC. It could potentially even see the EFF being excluded from the upcoming elections.
"We apologise to the ANC and pledge our commitment to a free and fair democratic contestation of these elections," the EFF said in a public statement.
