“Utter madness”: SA reacts to Ramaphosa comparing Eskom to apartheid

President Cyril Ramaphosa made a powerful statement comparing South Africa’s struggle with the dysfunctional state-owned enterprise to the struggle for liberation. Ramaphosa asserted that just like apartheid was overcome, loadshedding will also be resolved.

Mzansi reacted to the strong statement and took to social media to share their views. Off the cusp, many pointed out that apartheid was overcome by removing the ruling party from power and suggested that removing the African National Congress may be the solution to the Eskom crisis.

Many other users took a more deeper approach in their criticisms of the president’s claims. One Twitter user, Steven Abrahams pointed out the glaring difference between Eskom’s failures and apartheid - apartheid was a planned system of oppression while Eskom was the result of corruption and lack of planning, Briefly.co.za found.

Regardless, the similarity lies in that both Eskom and apartheid were the result of financial greed and capitalist imperatives.

One user tried to explain Ramaphosa’s point of view and described the loadshedding crisis as “something manufactured by whites to hurt blacks”.

Nevertheless, the black people who were entrusted with protecting the interests of the people were coerced by greed to neglect their responsibilities.
