There’s a wave of optimism amongst South Africans following Bafana Bafana’s qualification for this year’s Afcon tournament and Briefly.co.za looks at previous tournaments as we gauge our chances of success.
Briefly.co.za has gathered that Bafana Bafana fever has struck the nation following Sunday’s heroics.
The national team pulled off a brave victory over Libya to seal their entry into the 2019 version of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Over the last few years, support and enthusiasm for Bafana have been underwhelming, but things feel different this time around.
Some of the critical factors are already in Bafana’s favour.
Most of the key players are fit or some will be returning from injury prior to June, confidence has returned and the team seems to have unearthed a quality backup goalkeeper.
However, it has to be noted that Bafana’s solitary taste of Afcon silverware was achieved 23 years ago.
Since that success, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has done well but the national team hasn’t matched this on the pitch.
In subsequent tournaments, Bafana has flattered to deceive, finishing rock bottom in the group stages in 2006 and 2015.
Having failed to qualify in 2017, the country has welcomed the team’s achievement this year.
ENCA reported that there could be a huge spike in promotional activity from SAFA as it looks to maximise national interest.
Hopefully, Bafana Bafana give supporters something to celebrate later this year as fans are already dreaming of continental glory.
